My name is Cheryl Patterson, and I have two auto-immune diseases. I also have a couple other chronic diseases, but I’d like to talk about Multiple Sclerosis here, about how it’s impacted my life, and how what I’ve learned can improve the lives of other MS patients and anyone else with an autoimmune disease. I was diagnosed with MS after the birth of my second child. I was 34 years old then and I’ve had two more children after that. I started with Relapsing-Remitting MS, which converted to Secondary Progressive MS after 20 years, as this disease usually does. Since my diagnosis 36 years ago, I’ve experienced many of the typical MS symptoms — visual problems, strange sensations throughout my body, pain, dizziness and balance problems, major fatigue, brain fog, muscle spasms and excruciating contractions. Now, it’s the continuing and progressive weakness of my legs that has really changed my life. I used to go creek-walking and exploring with my 4 kids in streams around our house. Our favorite family vacations were spent downhill skiing in the Rocky Mountains. I did vigorous workouts, lifting free weights 4-5 times a week. I loved to ride the Life Cycle and use our rowing machine. Now, I walk with a cane, and I recently bought a rolling walker. I also use a wheelchair for trips to places where distances are more than I can handle. Everyone my age is now retiring and learning to play pickle ball — and I can barely walk! But there are still plenty of things I can do, and am finding different ways to do the things I love. Which brings me to health and wellness. I’ve been a registered nurse for 48 years and I’m still working. My career focus has been all about health and wellness. My clinical specialty areas are orthopaedics, pain management, and rehab. I’ve worked in clinical care, healthcare administration, academic research, and university teaching.
Before I was diagnosed with MS, I provided nursing care for hospitalized patients with advanced MS. I saw the world of MS from the “outside looking in,” taking care of these patients and families as they faced many challenges and issues.
Since my diagnosis, I see the world of MS from the “inside looking out,” and that perspective has brought both challenges and insight.
As a health and wellness coach my focus is helping MS patients and others who have an auto-immune disease or chronic illness.
I will help you clarify the problems and issues that impact you most — and help you explore approaches and solutions that best fit your needs. Together, we will develop a goal-focused plan to maximize your health, wellness, and your quality of life.
Let’s take this journey together.
" Life and career coaching with Cheryl helped me in various
areas of my personal life as well as my professional life. I had worked as a nurse for several years and was looking for something more but wasn’t sure what to do—leave nursing all together? be a nurse practitioner? be a pharmaceutical
sales rep? go into healthcare management? Should I move to another city? What would make me happy? The coaching process with Cheryl led me to recognize my
strengths and talents, determine my priorities, establish my career and life goals, and then make progress toward reaching those goals. She is a great listener and
very easy to talk with openly. Each coaching session leaves me feeling positive and energized about my future and my life."
" I struggled for years with numerous problems related to my Lupus but had always dealt with things from the medical management side of it. I would see different doctors of various medical specialties. Sometimes they would refer me to other non-physician practitioners like psychologists, or therapists. But when I started this coaching program with Cheryl, I began to realize there is so much more to achieving maximum wellness. Our coaching sessions address diverse topics related to all areas of health (physical, mental, emotional, vocational, spiritual, relationships, and others). And I learn methods, receive tools, obtain valuable information to continue making progress toward my goals. Since starting this coaching program, I feel healthier in new ways I didn’t even expect."
" When I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis, I didn’t know
where to turn and I was scared about my future. I have what I think is good medical treatment, but MS causes so many different problems. I know there’s a lot of information out there about MS, but I had trouble sifting through that mountain of info for what would help me. Then someone referred me to Cheryl for coaching about living with MS. Her coaching program has been helpful in many
areas of my life. She helps me verbalize and clarify what’s bothering me, and then together we identify goals and action plans. Cheryl is a source of valuable advice, empathy, understanding,
and applicable information about MS because she speaks as a person who has lived with MS for many years. In addition, she is a nurse who has cared for many patients with MS. I would recommend Cheryl’s coaching program to anyone with MS.
